Fiji Labour Party Demands Action Amid FICAC Leadership Controversy

The Fiji Labour Party has expressed strong opposition to Barbara Malimali taking on the role of head of FICAC while she is under investigation. In a statement, Fiji Labour Party Leader and former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized that Malimali should resign as Commissioner of FICAC until independent and impartial officials can properly address the complaints against her related to abuse of office.

Chaudhry highlighted that Malimali is currently under arrest and is undergoing questioning. He also raised concerns regarding Attorney General Graham Leung, pointing out the close relationship between Leung and Malimali. He noted that in April 2024, Malimali, while serving as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, recommended Leung to replace Ana Mataiciwa as Supervisor of Elections.

Chaudhry further criticized Malimali’s appointment, referencing her court appearance in July, where she acted as counsel for Jason Zong, who was charged with bribery by FICAC.
