Fiji is hosting the first-ever Oceania Rugby high-performance camp for match officials in Nadi, marking a significant advancement in the development of rugby officiating standards across the region. The camp, which is backed by the Department of Foreign Affairs through its PacificAus Sports program, aims to enhance the skills and performance of match officials.
Notably, Olympian referee Lavenia Racaca and emerging official Meresiana Savenaca have been chosen by Oceania Rugby to officiate in the Australian Championship on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. This appointment will be Meresiana’s first on the international stage, presenting a major opportunity for the up-and-coming referee. The presence of two female referees from Fiji operating at an elite level underscores the increasing influence of Fijian women in rugby officiating.
The camp is led by seasoned international referees and educators, offering an essential chance for referees throughout the Pacific to refine their techniques and stay updated with the latest advancements in officiating. Participants will take part in training sessions, workshops, and discussions aimed at promoting excellence and collaboration among match officials.
Oceania Rugby President Richard Sapias highlighted the significance of the camp, describing it as a pivotal moment for rugby development in the region. “Launching this initiative in Fiji reinforces our commitment to supporting match officials and advancing excellence in rugby,” Sapias stated.
Additionally, the camp is designed to create clear pathways for aspiring referees, laying a strong foundation for the future of the sport in the Pacific.
