Fiji's Film Frontier: A Call for Collaboration with India's Cinematic Creators

Fiji Invites Bollywood to Uncover Hidden Histories Through Film

Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has extended an invitation to the Indian film industry to partner with local writers and creatives in producing films, both commercial and documentary, that delve into Fiji’s indenture history. He assured that the government would provide support for these collaborative efforts.

In his recent remarks, Professor Prasad expressed enthusiasm for the proposals by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a visit to Mauritius, which emphasized the importance of documenting the Girmit stories—theirs being a vital part of Fiji’s history. Modi’s initiative promotes ongoing research, filmmaker support, and talent development in storytelling.

Professor Prasad highlighted the need to explore the economics related to the indenture system, suggesting that a deeper understanding of these economic factors will enrich the narrative of Girmit and its historical significance.

This initiative mirrors previous discussions led by Professor Prasad on enhancing Fiji’s audio-visual and film industries, aligning with the strategic objectives of Fiji’s new National Development Plan, known as “The People’s Plan.” This plan emphasizes nurturing local talent and education in the creative arts, with the government pledging to bolster support for local universities and training programs aimed at cultivating the next generation of filmmakers and writers.

The collaboration with India represents a significant opportunity for cultural exchange and the preservation of crucial historical narratives, while simultaneously contributing to the growth of Fiji’s local film industry. By focusing on storytelling through film, this initiative not only strengthens the creative sector but also empowers communities to share their stories with a wider audience, fostering a sense of pride and connection to their heritage.
