The ongoing Commission of Inquiry (COI) examining the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner is currently in its second week. Tanya Waqanika, Malimali’s defense counsel and a Suva lawyer, shared that the process has been lengthy, and she anticipates that the inquiry may be extended due to the ongoing proceedings.

Waqanika, in a recent interview, refrained from commenting on whether she perceives the COI as a witch hunt aimed at discrediting Malimali. Despite the challenges of the inquiry, she noted that Malimali remains in good spirits, emphasizing a moment they spent together at their shared church.

Justice David Aston-Lewis is presiding over the inquiry, which is focused on determining if Malimali’s appointment in September 2024 followed all legal procedures and was free from undue influences, especially considering potential vested interests concerning high-profile FICAC cases. The inquiry involves significant public figures and is scheduled to present its final report to Fiji’s President and Prime Minister later this month.

This inquiry represents a critical step towards reinforcing transparency and accountability in the governance of Fiji, especially concerning the integrity of public service appointments. It offers a meaningful opportunity for reform, highlighting the importance of adhering to ethical standards within the justice system.

Overall, as the Commission of Inquiry unfolds, it serves not only to clarify the circumstances surrounding Malimali’s appointment but also to restore public confidence in governance practices, showcasing a commitment to ensuring that processes are conducted fairly and transparently. The potential outcomes of this inquiry could play an essential role in fostering a more accountable and trustworthy governance framework in Fiji.
