The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has praised the groundbreaking initiative of shipping green hydrogen from New Zealand to Fiji, alongside the launch of a cutting-edge hydrogen dual-fuel generator at the Fiji Gas Terminal in Lautoka.

FCCC CEO Joel Abraham highlighted that this project, spearheaded by Obayashi Corporation and Halcyon Power in collaboration with Fiji Gas, and supported by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, exemplifies how global partnerships can foster transformative solutions that harmonize economic development with environmental responsibility.

“This initiative is a significant leap towards sustainable energy options for Fiji and the wider Pacific region, effectively tackling climate change challenges and helping Fiji meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement,” Abraham stated.

The FCCC’s steadfast commitment to promoting renewable energy innovations is evident, and Abraham expressed pride in seeing Fiji lead the way in setting regional sustainability standards. He remarked that embracing innovation and international cooperation paves the way for enhanced energy security, propelling the nation towards independence from fossil fuels and unlocking cleaner energy alternatives.

The pilot project features an integrated green supply chain, utilizing geothermal energy from New Zealand—a renewable and carbon-neutral resource—to create green hydrogen, which is then transported to Fiji. Upon arrival at the Lautoka Terminal, the hydrogen is utilized to fuel a dual-fuel generator capable of operating on both hydrogen and diesel. This system significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, producing cleaner energy in the process.

Moreover, diversifying fuel sources through hydrogen technology promotes energy security by decreasing dependence on imported fuels, ultimately saving costs and enhancing Fiji’s energy autonomy as global energy markets face increasing volatility.

Abraham conveyed thanks to the governments of Japan and New Zealand for their pivotal support. “We are grateful for Japan’s visionary backing and New Zealand’s essential role in green hydrogen production and supply. Your leadership fosters hope for a sustainable future for Fiji and the Pacific region,” he added.

Looking ahead, the FCCC is committed to supporting and advancing further green energy initiatives to ensure that Fiji maintains its position as a leader in sustainable development within the Pacific. The commission encourages other stakeholders to draw inspiration from this project and collaborate on initiatives that address critical issues such as climate change, energy security, and economic growth.

“By adopting innovative technologies, Fiji is charting a course for a greener future where progress and sustainability can coexist,” Abraham concluded.

This initiative not only enhances Fiji’s energy independence but also sets a positive example for sustainable practices which could inspire similar programs across the region, fostering a collective effort against climate challenges.
