Fiji Inmates’ Hunger Strike Sparks Human Rights Investigation

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) is investigating the case of two inmates who recently conducted a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correctional facility. This investigation follows a statement from the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) detailing the reasons behind the inmates’ protest.

The two inmates, who worked in the facility’s kitchen, protested over issues related to food supply management. They were temporarily removed from their positions to facilitate an internal investigation into the matter. In response to their grievances, the inmates initiated a hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their previous roles.

FCS confirmed that the hunger strike concluded on Monday evening, with their medical team conducting health assessments of the strikers. Pravesh Sharma, the FHRADC Commissioner, stated that a team from the Commission is currently looking into the situation. The FHRADC also reported that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and that they will continue to monitor the developments closely.
