Fiji Inmates’ Hunger Strike Sparks Human Rights Investigation

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has initiated an investigation concerning two inmates who recently engaged in a hunger strike at the Naboro Maximum Correction Facility.

The investigation was confirmed after the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) issued a statement explaining the circumstances that led to the protest. The inmates embarked on the hunger strike due to a disagreement over the management of food supplies within the facility.

Both inmates had been assigned to work in the facility’s kitchen but were temporarily removed from their positions to facilitate an internal investigation. In protest, they began their hunger strike last Friday, demanding to be reinstated to their original roles.

FCS released another statement on Monday, indicating that the hunger strike had concluded and that the medical team would evaluate the health of the participants. FHRADC Commissioner Pravesh Sharma stated that a team from the Commission is looking into the issue. Furthermore, the FHRADC confirmed that the inmates are receiving medical assistance and that they will continue to monitor the situation closely.
