The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has decided to temporarily halt the practice of allowing inmates to attend the funerals of their close relatives. This decision is part of a broader review of all operational policies and procedures, aimed at enhancing the safety, security, and consistency of services offered by the FCS.
In recent years, the FCS has occasionally permitted inmates to be temporarily released to attend the funerals of immediate family members as a compassionate gesture. However, the lack of a formal policy governing these releases has underscored the need for a thorough evaluation.
Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, emphasized the importance of family and the significant emotional toll of loss on inmates, but also stressed the necessity of having clear and consistent guidelines to ensure public safety and operational integrity.
The review will concentrate on several key areas:
– Developing clear eligibility criteria for temporary release on compassionate grounds.
– Ensuring the safety and security of both the public and inmates.
– Reducing any operational disruptions caused by such releases.
– Engaging with key stakeholders to align the policy with best practices.
Dr. Nakarawa further stated that during this review period, no inmates will be permitted to attend funerals.
