Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa has highlighted a critical situation in Fiji regarding child abuse, revealing that 68 percent of recorded cases involve neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. As the Shadow Minister for Health and a church leader, he expressed his deep concern over what he describes as societal decay.
Recent statistics from the Child Welfare Act National Database indicate that there were 1,477 cases reported in 2023, with a staggering 73 percent of the offenders being known to the victims. Alarmingly, half of these perpetrators are immediate family members.
Ravunawa emphasized the urgency to address this issue and called for action. He stated, “We need to stop being spectators to this horrifying reality. It is time we raise our voices.” He underscored the importance of advocacy for children’s rights and the necessity for collective action to ensure their protection.
On World Children’s Day and the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, Ravunawa urged the community to not only recognize this day but to embody its message in daily life. He reminded everyone that the safety of children is a shared responsibility, as they represent the future of Fiji.
