Latest development: more than 50 children turned out at the Fiji Football Association Academy Ground in Vatuwaqa yesterday to mark World Football Week at a youth-focused event held under the theme “Be Active.” The small-scale but energetic programme gave youngsters a chance to pick up basic football skills, take part in fun games and spend an active day moving through football and related activities as part of FIFA’s global push to get children physically active for at least 60 minutes every day.

Organisers said the programme emphasised participation and enjoyment over competition, with drills and games designed to build coordination, teamwork and a love of the sport. The local event forms part of FIFA’s wider campaign that this week is promoting daily physical activity for children through football and community activities, aiming to link the professional game’s visibility with grassroots uptake of healthy habits.

The youth initiative came as the domestic season continued: the Extra Premier League match between Lautoka and Tailevu Naitasiri was underway at Churchill Park in Lautoka at the time of the Vatuwaqa gathering, while Ba is scheduled to host Nasinu at 3pm today at Govind Park. The overlap between community engagement events and top-tier matches is being used locally to raise the profile of the Week and to provide visible role models for young participants.

This marks the latest local manifestation of long-running efforts by national sporting bodies to channel youth interest in sport into sustained participation and potential talent pathways. The Fiji National Sports Commission and partners have previously stressed the importance of early engagement and structured opportunities to nurture talent. The recent turnout in Vatuwaqa — albeit modest in size — demonstrates grassroots interest that organisers and development officials say can feed into school and club programmes.

What is new in this report is the concrete, on-the-ground participation: more than 50 children attending and engaging in FIFA-endorsed activities at an FFA facility. That local uptake gives organisers a measurable snapshot of community response to the global campaign and a basis for planning further outreach, particularly in linking schools, local clubs and league fixtures to build sustained activity beyond a single event.

While organisers did not release longer-term participation targets or follow-up dates, the Vatuwaqa event underlines a practical step in connecting global messaging to local action. As the domestic season progresses and fixtures such as the Lautoka–Tailevu Naitasiri and Ba–Nasinu matches proceed, the Fiji Football Association will be watching to see whether exposure to top-level matches and community activations translates into ongoing weekly activity for the youngsters who took part.
