Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad has praised the Indian High Commission for its dedication to promoting the Hindi language and culture in Fiji. Attending the Hindi Kavi Sammelan 2025 on Friday in celebration of World Hindi Day, Prof. Prasad honored notable Hindi poets from Suva and spoke highly of the historic bond between Fiji and India, emphasizing that their connection is strengthened through the Hindi language.
“The relationship between Fiji and India is a historic bond,” he noted. “And this relationship is connected through our Hindi language; we have now officially introduced Hindi in Parliament.”
During this event, three Hindi books by author Uttra Gurdyal were also launched, marking a significant cultural milestone. The recognition of Hindi in the Fijian Parliament signals an exciting step toward honoring and retaining the rich heritage of the Hindi-speaking community in Fiji.
This event resonates with previous celebrations of Indo-Fijian culture, such as the Ramayan Mela, where Prof. Prasad highlighted the importance of cultural ties between Fiji and India. Such initiatives not only help preserve the linguistic traditions but also foster unity and understanding among diverse communities.
The flourishing of the Hindi language in Fiji is not only a nostalgic homage but also an optimistic vision for the future, encouraging further cultural engagement and appreciation. As languages act as powerful tools for cultural preservation, the promotion of Hindi alongside other languages like Tamil, which is also seeing a revival in Fiji’s educational landscape, signifies a broader commitment to multiculturalism and diversity in the nation.
In conclusion, the recognition of Hindi in Parliament and the celebration of World Hindi Day represent hopeful advancements towards a culturally rich future for Fiji, uniting its communities in shared heritage and language.
