The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has temporarily halted the practice of allowing inmates to attend the funerals of close family members. This decision is part of an ongoing assessment of operational policies and procedures aimed at enhancing safety, security, and consistency within the FCS.
For several years, the FCS has granted temporary releases to inmates for funeral attendance on a case-by-case basis as a humanitarian act. However, the lack of a formal policy regarding such releases has necessitated a thorough review.
Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Corrections, stated, “While we understand the importance of family and the emotional toll of losing a loved one on inmates, it is essential to establish clear and consistent guidelines that balance these factors with public safety, security, and our operational needs.”
The review will concentrate on several key areas, including:
– Creating clear eligibility criteria for temporary release under compassionate circumstances.
– Ensuring the safety and security of both the public and inmates.
– Minimizing operational disruptions caused by such releases.
– Engaging with stakeholders to ensure the policy incorporates best practices.
Dr. Nakarawa further emphasized that during this review period, no inmates will be permitted to attend funerals.
