The sporting community in Fiji is grieving the loss of Ubayd Haider, a celebrated boxer previously known as Nathan Singh. Haider tragically passed away on October 26 after collapsing in the changing room at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park. He was pronounced dead at Lautoka Hospital later that night, leaving both his family and the nation in shock.

Fiji’s Government, represented by Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, has publicly expressed deep sorrow over Haider’s death, acknowledging his significant influence on the country’s sports scene. Minister Saukuru conveyed heartfelt condolences to Haider’s family, friends, and the wider boxing community, underscoring the deep loss felt across the nation.

“This is indeed a very sad day for sports in Fiji as we mourn the untimely passing of Ubayd Haider,” Mr. Saukuru stated. He emphasized the government’s commitment to conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances of Haider’s collapse, assuring that it is crucial to understand the factors leading to such a tragic event.

In a bid to provide comfort during this difficult time, Mr. Saukuru shared a biblical quote from Romans 14:8, reminding everyone of the eternal connection to faith: “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”

Haider’s funeral is set to take place in Suva, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory. His legacy, both in the ring and in the hearts of those who admired him, will undoubtedly endure.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of valuing each moment. The government’s commitment to an investigation not only honors Haider’s memory but reinforces the need for safety and health awareness in sports, potentially paving the way for improved measures in the future.
