The government is seeking a one-year timeframe from the Fiji Muslim League (FML) to develop relocation plans for over 400 families currently residing in a settlement at Nabua. Recently, residents received eviction notices from the FML, with a deadline for vacating the land set for Saturday, December 28.
Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa met with the affected residents and assured them of government support during the transition. He explained that a survey will be conducted to gather information about the residents, including details about tenancy and properties owned, which is crucial for planning their relocation.
The Minister emphasized the need for a collaborative approach, involving various stakeholders to assist the families in need. He expressed hope that the FML, as a compassionate organization, would work with the government to secure the necessary budgets and land for relocation. Additionally, he mentioned the iTaukei Lands Trust Board’s role in identifying potential relocation sites.
While some relocation plans have been proposed, there is hesitance among certain residents to move to designated areas, prompting the need for incentives to facilitate the transition. The Minister is optimistic about the meeting’s outcomes, hoping that the residents will enjoy a peaceful Christmas despite the challenges they face.
This situation highlights a crucial effort by the government and associated bodies to address housing and community needs, reflecting a commitment to ensuring that families have stable living conditions. It is a reminder of the importance of cooperation and compassion in public service efforts, particularly during difficult times.
