The Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa kicked off the weekend with its weekly Stableford competition on Saturday, a highly anticipated event that brought together nearly 60 eager golfers. This particular competition served as an ideal pre-season opportunity for members to shake off the holiday festivities and return to the course.

Opetaia Ravai, chairman of the games committee, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, noting its significance for both fitness and social connections. “Today is like a pre-season event where people get out and play golf after Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. It’s a great way to get some exercise and work up a sweat,” Ravai stated, highlighting the combination of recreation and community bonding that the tournament fosters.

After recent rainfall had left the course wet, only the back nine holes were playable for the day, leading to a spirited event with two rounds scheduled. Thankfully, the sun made a long-awaited appearance, positively impacting the atmosphere and encouraging a good turnout despite the weather challenges. Ravai remarked, “The weather is beautiful today, and it’s great to see the sun after the rain we’ve had; I hope the golfers enjoy the game.”

The event saw generous sponsorship support from Rosie Hearts, particularly for the junior division, while the Fiji Golf Club offered prizes for participants. Overall, the combination of great weather, enthusiastic participation, and spirited competition made the weekly Stableford event a successful and enjoyable outing, providing golfers with a wonderful blend of exercise, enjoyment, and camaraderie.

Such events underscore the ongoing commitment to fostering a welcoming and supportive golfing community in Fiji, especially for young aspiring golfers who are encouraged to join and participate in these competitions. The positive atmosphere not only promotes healthy exercise but also strengthens social ties among members, suggesting a bright future for the sport in the region.
