Officers from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Services (FRCS) and various border agencies have been equipped with state-of-the-art drug detection technology in an effort to enhance drug enforcement capabilities within Fiji. The advanced equipment, including First Defenders and TruNarc, was generously provided by the Japanese government in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

This cutting-edge technology significantly improves the ability of Fijian border officials to scan and analyze narcotics and hazardous substances in real time. The new tools will allow for immediate classifications of drugs, eliminating the lengthy wait times for laboratory results that previously burdened law enforcement operations.

During the handover ceremony, Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Fiji in bolstering its border security. He highlighted the pressing need for enhanced vigilance given Fiji’s expansive maritime zones and the associated security concerns.

Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, stressed the urgency of protecting Fiji from drug trafficking, referencing a recent international drug seizure in Spain linked to packages marked ‘Fiji.’ He issued a clear warning to potential traffickers: “Do not bring drugs to Fiji because we will catch you, and this equipment enhances our detection capabilities.”

This proactive initiative is a positive step towards safeguarding Fiji’s borders and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens while strengthening international partnerships in the fight against drug trafficking.

In summary, the addition of advanced drug detection equipment in Fiji not only enhances local law enforcement efforts but also serves as a deterrent to drug traffickers who may consider Fiji an easy target. The collaborative efforts between the Japanese government and the United Nations Development Programme demonstrate a commitment to combatting drug-related issues on a global scale. This partnership brings hope for a safer Fiji and strengthens regional security cooperation.
