In 2025, Fiji’s futsal scene is expected to reach new heights, according to national coach Jerry Sam. Following the performances at the Extra Supermarket Futsal Inter-District Championship (IDC), Sam expressed his admiration for the players and acknowledged the vital role of the tournament’s sponsor, Extra, in promoting the sport’s growth in the nation.
Sam emphasized the importance of investment in futsal if the team is to enhance its competitiveness, particularly with significant competitions like the OFC futsal championships on the horizon. Fiji will also host the club championship, paving the way for broader development within the sport.
Identifying fresh talents during the IDC, Sam plans on constructing a training camp with a goal of selecting a 30-member squad by March. An open trial will also be organized for players who could not participate in the IDC but wish to showcase their abilities for a spot on the national team.
Futsal IDC champions Suva will represent Fiji at the upcoming Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Championship, and Sam is ready to lend his expertise to aid the team’s preparation.
With a focus on younger, active players, Sam is set to finalize his squad after six weeks of training, ensuring the best candidates are chosen for competition.
This proactive approach reflects a promising outlook for Fiji’s futsal future, as the commitment to nurturing local talent and community engagement can foster a stronger sporting culture. The participation of younger players indicates a shift towards long-term growth in the sport, belonging to a new generation of athletes ready to make their mark on the futsal scene.
Overall, the future of Fijian futsal looks bright, with strong foundations being laid for the years to come.
