Fiji Football’s Passport Dilemma: Can They Rally Without Krishna?

Fiji’s football head coach Rob Sherman has emphasized a critical need for professional footballers eligible to represent Fiji to finalize their passport applications ahead of the semi-final clash against New Zealand in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Oceania Qualifiers on March 21. This situation has become even more pressing with the news that captain and star striker Roy Krishna will be sidelined due to an ACL injury.

Fiji faces a formidable challenge in Wellington as they prepare to take on New Zealand, who are considered favorites for the match. Meanwhile, the other semi-final will feature New Caledonia against Tahiti.

Sherman stated that while there will be no significant changes in terms of tactics and preparation, obtaining passports for players currently competing professionally is crucial. He noted that there are talented athletes playing for clubs like Leeds United, Vancouver, Toronto, and Auckland FC who could significantly enhance Fiji’s squad if they were able to represent their country.

In the absence of Krishna, who boasts over 50 international appearances and 44 goals, Sherman is looking to other players such as Sairusi Nalaubu, Setareki Hughes, and Thomas Dunn to rise to the occasion. He expressed confidence in the striking abilities of the squad, believing that they can capitalize on goal-scoring opportunities.

Sherman also pointed out several areas for improvement, including the team’s ability to quickly reorganize defensively after losing possession, as well as enhancing their defense during set plays. These adjustments are essential as Fiji prepares for the crucial matches ahead.

In summary, while Fiji faces challenges with player eligibility and injuries, there is an optimistic outlook for the upcoming semi-final. The team is encouraged to step up and build upon their collective strengths in pursuit of a successful performance on the international stage.
