The Fiji men’s football team, coached by Rob Sherman, has experienced a significant rise in their FIFA ranking, moving up four spots to become the second highest ranked team from the Oceania Football Confederation at 146. This marks their highest ranking since 2011.

Known as the Bula Boys, the team achieved this advancement by defeating the Solomon Islands in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, allowing them to surpass their competitors in the rankings.

Fiji has the opportunity to further improve their position if they secure a win against Papua New Guinea next month. The latest rankings have also seen New Caledonia and Vanuatu climb five places to ranks 155 and 157 respectively, following their victories in World Cup qualifying matches.

In contrast, Papua New Guinea is experiencing a downward trend, slipping to 171, marking their lowest ranking since 2018.

Rajesh Patel, president of the Fiji Football Association, expressed his joy at the team’s ranking, highlighting it as a reflection of the players’ and coaching staff’s hard work, as well as the broader football community’s commitment in Fiji.

Patel noted, “This progress reflects the dedication and strategic efforts we have invested over the years to elevate Fijian football.” He emphasized that this ranking is the outcome of long-term commitments to player development, coaching, and infrastructure, building a solid foundation for future growth.

Acknowledging that criticism is a natural aspect of the sport, Patel stressed the importance of unity within the community. He stated, “Constructive criticism is important and helps us reflect and improve. However, we must also recognize that the path to success is not always straightforward, and we will face challenges along the way.”

He encouraged the community to see the new ranking as a positive sign of Fiji’s advancement and reiterated that reaching the upper echelons of the sport requires collective support. Patel confirmed that the Fiji FA is committed to maintaining this momentum, addressing areas needing improvement as part of a strategic plan aimed at raising the standard of football in the nation. He extended his gratitude to the loyal supporters who have consistently backed the team.
