Fiji Football Makes History: Baby Bula Boys Head to FIFA U-17 World Cup!

The Digicel Fiji Baby Bula Boys have secured a spot in next year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar. This achievement came after Fiji triumphed over Tahiti with a score of 2-1 in the semi-final of the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship held in Papeete.

This marks Fiji’s first appearance in the final in 25 years, where they will compete against New Zealand, a formidable force in Oceania. The last time Fiji reached the final of the OFC U-16 championship was in 1999 against Australia.

Veleni Rasorewa’s exceptional performance, including two remarkable individual goals, propelled the Fiji team into the championship final. His first goal occurred in the seventh minute, where he skillfully evaded two defenders and expertly slid the ball past Tahiti’s goalkeeper, Keahi Tenania, giving Fiji an early lead.

Three minutes later, Tenania was tested again when Maika Dau nearly converted a free kick into the second goal for Fiji. Although Tahiti had its moments in the first half, they struggled to penetrate Fiji’s resilient defense, and the Fijians maintained a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Fiji was put on the defensive as Tahiti pressed for an equalizer, but they could not capitalize on their opportunities. In the 68th minute, Rasorewa secured Fiji’s second goal, showcasing his speed as he broke through two defenders.

Tahiti managed to inch back into the game when a shot from outside the box deflected off a Fijian defender and found its way into the net with 20 minutes left. Nevertheless, Fiji held on to their lead until the final whistle, securing their place in the upcoming final against New Zealand.
