Savenaca Narube, leader of the Unity Fiji Party and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, has raised concerns over the capabilities of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, in the context of climate negotiations. Narube alleges that Professor Prasad lacks experience in this critical area and is misleading the public regarding the benefits and costs associated with Fiji’s participation in the upcoming United Nations Conference of Parties (COP29).

In his statement, Narube criticized Prasad’s justification for sending a large delegation to COP29, claiming it is an attempt to defend an indefensible decision. He argued that the agenda for COP29 has not significantly changed and suggested that many members of the delegation may simply be attending at taxpayers’ expense while not contributing meaningfully to the discussions.

Narube further disputed Prasad’s assertions about Fiji’s leadership among Pacific nations, positing that smaller countries could serve as better models in climate negotiations. He pointed out that representatives from other small island states are actively involved in key UNFCCC boards and committees, taking on significant roles.

Additionally, Narube highlighted a contradiction in the current government’s approach to delegation size, noting their prior criticisms of the previous FijiFirst Government for similar practices. He expressed disappointment that, despite criticizing these actions when in opposition, the current government has adopted similar or even more problematic strategies since taking office.

In response to these statements, it would be valuable for the government to articulate a clear vision and strategy for Fiji’s participation in international climate dialogues, ensuring transparency and accountability in their delegation choices. Engaging with grassroots communities might help align national interests with the needs of vulnerable populations facing climate change.

Summary: Savenaca Narube criticizes Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister for lacking experience in climate negotiations and misleading the public about COP29 costs. He calls for a re-evaluation of Fiji’s approach to international climate representation, suggesting smaller countries might offer better examples. The situation presents an opportunity for the government to reaffirm its commitment to effective climate action and transparent practices.
