Pacific Sprint King Banuve Tabakaucoro is gearing up for what he anticipates will be an extremely competitive men’s 100-meter final at the upcoming Fiji Finals. Tabakaucoro emphasizes that while speed is crucial, the mental fortitude of the athletes will ultimately determine who secures the highly coveted blue ribbon title.
Having observed performances from various zone meets, he notes that this year’s field is particularly tight, with several athletes clocking impressive times. “I think the one that will probably take it out… needs to come mentally prepared and be ready to take ownership of it,” Tabakaucoro said, highlighting the importance of mindset on competition day. He mentioned that unlike last year, where Semesa Caginivalu stood out with a dominating final, this year lacks a definitive favorite, making predictions challenging.
Tabakaucoro has also praised the preparations of the student-athletes, acknowledging an increase in off-season training as they aim to make a significant impact at Fiji’s premier school athletics event. This year’s event, taking place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva from April 24 to 26, is anticipated to feature a host of formidable competitors from Vanua Levu, known for contributing exciting performances.
This sentiment is echoed by Marist Brothers High School’s coach, Antonio Raboiliku, who expressed optimism about the Blue Ribbon event, underscoring a vigorous training environment among athletes. The community’s involvement remains strong, with schools rallying together to support their competitors, showcasing a spirit of unity and sportsmanship.
As the Fiji Finals approach, excitement is palpable, with over 1,000 athletes from 18 schools expected to participate, signaling a robust dedication to athletics in Fiji. Live coverage of the games will be provided by FBC TV, further encouraging community engagement.
With each athlete pursuing their ambitions in front of a supportive crowd, this year’s Fiji Finals represents not just a test of speed but a celebration of perseverance, teamwork, and the profound sense of community that athletics fosters across Fiji. There’s great hope that these young athletes will inspire the next generation to strive for excellence in sports.
