The Ministry of Health is ramping up efforts to enhance HIV diagnostics throughout the country. This initiative was confirmed by Dr. Rachel Devi, the head of Family Health, after the release of new statistics showing that 552 new HIV cases were reported from January to June this year.
New cases of HIV have emerged across all regions of Fiji, with the Central division accounting for 380 cases, the Western division reporting 151 cases, the Northern division recording 19 cases, and the Eastern division having 2 cases. This figure represents a 33% increase compared to the total number of cases reported in 2023.
Dr. Devi emphasized the importance of expanding diagnostics nationwide, focusing on improving screening and testing, as well as ensuring patients receive care. One of the key components of effective diagnostics is the treatment and care provided to patients.
Although the rise in new cases is concerning, the Ministry expects the numbers to continue to grow as it enhances its national screening and testing efforts and enrollment into care programs. According to the Ministry’s data, 73% of the new cases affect individuals under 39 years of age. Specifically, 137 cases (24.8%) were found in the 20 to 24 age group, 128 cases (23%) in the 25 to 29 age group, and 50 cases (9%) in the 15 to 19 age group.
