Fiji Fashion Week goes single-day showcase to ease costs for designers

Fiji Fashion Week will be reduced from a planned two-day programme to a single-day showcase this year, organisers confirmed, citing mounting economic pressures across the country. The condensed event is set for Saturday, May 30, at the Vodafone Arena and will feature 15 designers, Managing Director Ellen Whippy-Knight said on Wednesday.

Whippy-Knight told reporters the decision followed extensive consultations with industry stakeholders and reflected a careful response to the rising cost of fuel and essential goods that many in the community are feeling. “This was not an easy decision,” she said. “We recognise the financial pressures many in our community are facing, and we felt it was important to respond with care and responsibility.”

Despite the reduction in scale, Whippy-Knight stressed that the festival’s purpose — to showcase and support Fiji’s creative industry — remains unchanged. “At the heart of this decision is our commitment to our people, our designers, supporters and the wider public,” she said. The single-day format, she added, is intended to preserve the event’s impact while easing financial and logistical burdens on participants and organisers.

Organisers have confirmed 15 designers will present their collections at the Vodafone Arena on May 30. While Whippy-Knight acknowledged that scaling back the programme was difficult, she expressed confidence the one-day showcase would continue to uplift local talent and deliver a strong platform for designers to reach buyers, media and the public. “We are confident that this single showcase will be a strong event that continues to support and uplift our fashion industry,” she said.

The move comes as businesses and events across Fiji navigate higher operational costs driven by fuel price increases and broader rises in the price of everyday goods. Those pressures have prompted other sectors to reassess budgets and programming in recent months, and festival organisers said the decision was made with sensitivity to the current economic climate and the needs of participants.

Fiji Fashion Week has traditionally been one of the country’s most visible stages for local fashion talent, drawing designers, media and patrons to platform emerging and established labels. By consolidating the programme into a single day, organisers aim to maintain that visibility while limiting costs for designers, production crews and attendees.

Further logistical details, including the running order, ticketing and safety arrangements for the May 30 showcase, are expected to be released by organisers in the lead-up to the event. Whippy-Knight reiterated the organisation’s commitment to the sector, saying the scaled-back approach was a temporary measure designed to preserve the festival’s long-term role in supporting Fiji’s creative economy.
