Fiji Faces Water Supply Challenges Amid Prolonged Dry Spell

The Water Authority of Fiji has announced that the Levuka Water System is facing low raw water flows from its three primary sources: Totogo, Levuka Vaka-Viti, and Waitovu. This situation has arisen due to below-average rainfall in the dam catchment area and extended dry conditions affecting the region.

According to WAF, the decrease in raw water availability from the dam has hindered water production efforts, subsequently impacting the treated water levels in the reservoir and affecting supply for customers within the Levuka System. The WAF Hydrology team is closely monitoring the situation.

To mitigate the impact, WAF plans to implement valve operations to ration supply for customers served by the Levuka system during early mornings and afternoons. This approach is intended to help maintain adequate water levels at the dam and improve water production during off-peak nighttime hours, ensuring sufficient storage to meet peak day demands and providing customers with a fair share of water.

WAF is urging customers to conserve water and recommends investing in storage solutions, such as containers or water tanks, connected to the water system for backup supplies.
