Fiji Faces Water Shortages: What You Need to Know

The Water Authority of Fiji has reported a decrease in raw water flows from its Levuka Water System, originating from the three primary sources: Totogo, Levuka Vaka-Viti, and Waitovu. This decline is attributed to lower-than-normal rainfall in the dam catchment areas and ongoing dry weather conditions in Fiji.

As a result of the reduced raw water availability from the dam, water production has been adversely affected, resulting in lower treated water levels in the reservoir. This situation is impacting water supply to customers within the Levuka System.

In response, the WAF Hydrology team is closely monitoring the situation. To help alleviate the issue and enhance water production, the Water Authority plans to implement valve operations to ration water supply to customers during early mornings and afternoons. These operations aim to help recover adequate water levels at the dam and optimize water production during off-peak night hours, ensuring there is sufficient storage to meet peak day demands and provide a fair water share to customers.

WAF is urging customers to conserve water and suggests investing in storage containers or tanks connected to the water system for additional backup supplies.
