Fiji Faces Water Shortages Amidst Prolonged Dry Weather

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has reported a decline in raw water flows in the Levuka Water System from its three primary sources: Totogo, Levuka Vaka-Viti, and Waitovu. This decline is attributed to the below-average rainfall and prolonged dry weather that Fiji has been experiencing.

As a result of reduced water inflow from the dam, WAF’s water production efforts are being impacted, which in turn affects the treated water levels in the reservoir and the overall water supply to customers within the Levuka System. The WAF Hydrology team is closely monitoring the situation.

To address the water supply challenges, WAF plans to implement valve operations aimed at rationing the water distribution to customers from the Levuka system during early mornings and afternoons. This strategy will help to maintain adequate water levels in the dam and enhance water production during off-peak nighttime hours, ensuring that there is enough stored water to meet peak daily demand and provide a fair share to all customers.

WAF has urged customers to use water wisely and has recommended that they consider investing in storage containers or water tanks connected to the water system as a backup water supply solution.
