Fiji Faces Water Crisis: Urgent Conservation Measures Needed

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport has urged the public to conserve water as Fiji experiences an extended dry spell that could significantly affect the country’s water supply in the upcoming months.

Currently, Fiji is in its Dry Season, which traditionally lasts from May to October, offering minimal rainfall. Recent data collected over the past three months indicate that the nation is facing substantially below-average rainfall, a trend that aligns with the Dry Season patterns.

Consequently, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has reported critically low levels in several water reservoirs nationwide. This alarming situation has led authorities to issue a public advisory stressing the urgent need for responsible water usage.

As dry conditions are anticipated to last for at least the next two months, the Ministry is coordinating with vital sectors such as Tourism, Health, and Education to closely monitor the situation and implement necessary measures to alleviate the impact.

Residents are encouraged to minimize water usage, especially for non-essential activities, and to take proactive steps like fixing leaks and reusing water whenever possible. These minor actions can collectively contribute to preserving the country’s limited water resources during this trying time.

WAF has committed to continuously monitoring the situation and providing timely updates. Furthermore, the Ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to ensure water supplies reach the affected areas, including maritime communities.

“We ask everyone to contribute to water conservation efforts to help manage the available resources effectively,” stated Ro Filipe Tuisawau, emphasizing the essential role of public cooperation in handling this challenge.

The Ministry expressed its appreciation for the public’s understanding and cooperation as the country faces this crucial period of water scarcity.
