Fiji Faces Water Crisis: Urgent Conservation Measures Needed

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport is calling on the public to conserve water as Fiji faces a prolonged dry spell that could severely affect the nation’s water supply in the upcoming months.

Currently, Fiji is in its Dry Season, which lasts from May to October and is marked by low rainfall. Recent observations indicate that the country has experienced significantly below-average rainfall in the past three months, consistent with this season’s pattern.

Due to these conditions, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has reported critically low levels in several water reservoirs across the country. This alarming situation has led authorities to issue a public advisory to encourage responsible water use.

With dry conditions expected to continue for at least the next two months, the Ministry is collaborating with key sectors such as Tourism, Health, and Education to closely monitor the situation and implement necessary actions to alleviate the impact.

Residents are urged to minimize water usage, especially for non-essential tasks, and to take proactive measures such as repairing leaks and reusing water whenever possible. Collectively, these small actions can help in conserving the nation’s limited water resources during this challenging time.

WAF has committed to monitoring the situation diligently and providing timely updates. The Ministry is also partnering with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to ensure water supplies are delivered to affected regions, including maritime communities.

Ro Filipe Tuisawau emphasized the importance of public cooperation in managing the available resources, stating, “We ask everyone to contribute to water conservation efforts to help manage the available resources effectively.”

The Ministry has expressed gratitude for the public’s understanding and cooperation as Fiji navigates this critical period of water scarcity.
