Fiji Faces Water Crisis: Urgent Call for Conservation

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport is calling on the public to conserve water as Fiji faces an extended dry spell that could have a significant impact on the nation’s water supply in the months ahead.

Currently, Fiji is in its Dry Season, which lasts from May to October and is characterized by low rainfall. Recent observations indicate that the country has received significantly below-average rainfall over the past three months, further solidifying the effects of the Dry Season.

Consequently, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has reported critically low levels in various water reservoirs throughout the country. This alarming situation has led authorities to issue a public advisory, highlighting the importance of responsible water usage.

With dry conditions anticipated to continue for at least the next two months, the Ministry is actively collaborating with key sectors such as Tourism, Health, and Education to monitor the situation and implement measures to alleviate the impact.

Residents are encouraged to minimize water usage, particularly for non-essential tasks, and to take initiative by fixing leaks and reusing water when possible. Collectively, these small actions can help protect the nation’s limited water resources during this difficult time.

WAF has committed to closely monitoring the situation and providing timely updates. Additionally, the Ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to ensure that water supplies reach affected areas, including maritime communities.

“We ask everyone to contribute to water conservation efforts to help manage the available resources effectively,” said Ro Filipe Tuisawau, emphasizing the crucial role of public cooperation in this issue.

The Ministry has expressed appreciation for the public’s understanding and cooperation as the country faces this significant period of water scarcity.
