Fiji Faces Water Crisis: Tips for Conservation Amid Dry Season

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport is urging the public to conserve water due to anticipated dry weather conditions that could impact water supply in the upcoming months. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau noted that Fiji experiences two distinct climatological seasons: the Wet Season from November to April and the Dry Season from May to October.

Currently, Fiji is experiencing its Dry Season, characterized by minimal rainfall as reported from various meteorological stations. Tuisawau highlighted that recent rainfall data from the last three months confirms the country is firmly in its Dry Season, with precipitation levels significantly below the normal monthly averages.

Due to this, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has revealed that several water reservoirs have reached critical levels. With the dry conditions expected to continue for at least the next two months, the Ministry is collaborating with relevant authorities, including those in the Tourism, Health, and Education sectors, to monitor the situation and implement necessary measures to mitigate impacts and keep the public updated.

The Minister emphasized, “We urge all residents to use water sparingly during this period to ensure that available resources can meet everyone’s essential needs across the country.” He suggested practical steps like reducing water use for non-essential purposes, repairing leaks, and reusing water wherever feasible to help conserve supplies.

WAF will keep a close watch on the situation and provide updates as required. Meanwhile, the Ministry is partnering with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to deliver water to affected regions, including maritime communities.
