Fiji Faces Water Crisis: Government Urges Conservation Amid Dry Spell

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport has urged the public to conserve water as the dry weather conditions expected in the upcoming months may impact water supply.

Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted that Fiji experiences two distinct seasons: the Wet Season from November to April and the Dry Season from May to October. Currently, Fiji is in its Dry Season, with many meteorological stations reporting minimal rainfall.

Recent rainfall data over the past three months shows that Fiji remains firmly in its Dry Season, with precipitation levels significantly below the typical monthly averages. Consequently, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has reported that several water reservoirs are reaching critical levels.

As the dry spell is forecasted to continue for at least the next two months, the Ministry is collaborating with various authorities, including those in the Tourism, Health, and Education sectors, to monitor the situation and develop measures to mitigate the impact while keeping the public informed.

The Minister emphasized, “We urge all residents to use water sparingly during this period to ensure that available resources can meet the essential needs of everyone across the country.” He suggested that simple actions, such as reducing water use for non-essential tasks, fixing leaks, and reusing water where feasible, can significantly contribute to conservation efforts.

WAF will closely monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. Additionally, the Ministry is coordinating with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to supply water to affected areas, including those in maritime communities.
