Fiji Faces Water Crisis: Dry Season Pressures Supply

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport is urging the public to conserve water as dry weather conditions may impact water supply in the upcoming months. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau noted that Fiji has two main seasons: the Wet Season from November to April and the Dry Season from May to October. Currently, the country is experiencing the Dry Season, with limited rainfall reported from various meteorological stations.

Recent rainfall data over the past three months shows that Fiji’s rainfall levels are significantly below the normal monthly average, confirming the severity of the current dry season. Consequently, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has indicated that several water reservoirs have reached critical levels.

The dry spell is expected to last for at least the next two months. The Ministry is collaborating with key sectors such as Tourism, Health, and Education to assess the situation and develop strategies to mitigate the impacts while keeping the public informed.

Residents are encouraged to use water sparingly to ensure that available resources meet the essential needs of the entire population. Simple measures such as reducing water use for non-essential tasks, repairing leaks, and reusing water can significantly help.

WAF will continue to monitor water levels and provide necessary updates. Meanwhile, the Ministry is coordinating with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to supply water to affected regions, particularly maritime communities.
