Fiji Faces Water Crisis: Authorities Warn of Supply Shortages

The Water Authority of Fiji has announced that the Levuka Water System is currently facing low raw water flows due to diminishing levels from its three primary sources: Totogo, Levuka Vaka-Viti, and Waitovu. This situation has arisen because of below-average rainfall in the dam catchment area coupled with prolonged dry weather affecting the region.

The reduced raw water inflow has disrupted water production efforts, leading to lower treated water levels in the reservoir, which in turn impacts the water supply to residents served by the Levuka System. The WAF Hydrology team is closely monitoring the situation.

To mitigate the impact on water production, the Water Authority will be implementing valve operations daily during early mornings and afternoons. This strategy aims to ration the water supply while allowing time for recovery of water levels at the dam, particularly during off-peak hours at night, to ensure that there is enough stored water to meet daytime demand.

WAF is urging its customers to conserve water and recommends the installation of storage containers or water tanks linked to the water system for both storage and backup supply.
