Fiji Faces Water Crisis Amid Dry Weather: What You Need to Know

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport is urging the public to conserve water as dry weather conditions are expected to impact water supply in the upcoming months.

Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau explained that Fiji experiences two main seasons: the Wet Season from November to April and the Dry Season from May to October. Currently, the country is in its Dry Season, which has seen significantly low rainfall according to various meteorological stations.

Recent rainfall data from the past three months confirms Fiji is experiencing unusually low rainfall during this Dry Season, leading the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) to report that several water reservoirs are reaching critical levels.

With the dry spell anticipated to continue for at least the next two months, the Ministry is collaborating with key sectors like Tourism, Health, and Education to monitor the situation and implement measures to mitigate impacts while keeping the public informed.

The Ministry urges residents to use water sparingly to ensure that resources can adequately meet everyone’s essential needs across the country. Simple actions such as reducing non-essential water use, fixing leaks, and reusing water can have a significant positive impact.

WAF will keep a close eye on the situation and provide updates as necessary. Meanwhile, the Ministry is working with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to supply water to affected regions, including maritime communities.
