Fiji Faces Water Challenges: Tips to Conserve Amid Dry Spell

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport is urging the public to conserve water as dry weather conditions loom, potentially impacting water supply in the coming months. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau emphasized that Fiji experiences two distinct seasons: the Wet Season from November to April and the Dry Season from May to October. Currently, the country is amid its Dry Season, leading to minimal rainfall recorded at various meteorological stations.

Tuisawau noted that rainfall data over the past three months clearly indicates Fiji is experiencing its dry season, with levels significantly below the normal monthly average. Consequently, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has reported that several water reservoirs are now critically low.

With the ongoing dry spell expected to last for at least the next two months, the Ministry is collaborating with relevant authorities and key sectors such as Tourism, Health, and Education to monitor the situation, planning necessary measures to mitigate impacts and keep the public updated.

“We encourage all residents to use water sparingly during this time to ensure that available resources can satisfy everyone’s essential needs nationwide,” Tuisawau stated. He suggested that simple actions, such as reducing water use for non-essential tasks, repairing leaks, and reusing water whenever possible, can significantly help.

WAF will closely monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary. Meanwhile, the Ministry is partnering with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to ensure water supply to affected regions, including maritime communities.
