Fiji Faces Road Safety Crisis Amid Alarming Accident Stats

Two significant stories are highlighted on the front page of The Fiji Times for Wednesday, September 25.

The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), which manages 91 percent of Fiji’s land for 7,747 iTaukei landowning units, has received approval from its board of directors to create a commercial arm aimed at enhancing economic benefits for landowners. Over 53,000 tenants currently lease this land.

In sports news, Waisea Nayacalevu, captain of the Flying Fijians at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, has called for major reforms within the Fiji Rugby Union. This appeal, made via social media, included allegations from Nayacalevu and fellow players Levani Botia and Semi Radradra regarding unpaid contracts, unfulfilled commitments, and outstanding payments to coaches and officials.

In an important reminder about road safety, a tragic incident occurred involving a 21-year-old man who lost his life in a car accident on Kings Road at Naviyago, Lautoka, on Saturday morning. The Director Traffic Senior Superintendent of Police, Mitieli Divuana, reported that the victim was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 30-year-old man who allegedly lost control, resulting in the vehicle crashing into railings and ending up in a river. The victim and two other passengers were rushed to Lautoka Aspen Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

This accident raises the road death toll to 41, down from 63 in the same period last year. The Land Transport Authority and police issued a staggering 182,615 traffic infringement notices from January to July 2024. Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau reported this statistic to Parliament.

Most of these offenses, totaling 179,371, relate to general violations, indicating ongoing issues with road safety in Fiji. While there has been a reduction in fatal accidents, each incident deeply affects families and communities. The recent loss of a young life highlights the dangers present on the roads.

It is encouraging to see the government and law enforcement agencies increasing their commitment to education and enforcement of traffic laws. Efforts should focus on raising awareness regarding safe driving practices, including the importance of seat belts, avoiding speeding, and minimizing distractions while driving.

The loss of life in Lautoka emphasizes the need for vigilance and strict adherence to traffic laws. Although annual campaigns are conducted to promote road safety, accidents still occur, suggesting a need for continuous dialogue around road laws and safety tips among drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

There is a pressing challenge to foster a culture of safety that leads to fewer tragedies on our roads. It’s imperative for both law enforcement and the community to collaborate in creating a safer driving environment for everyone.
