Fiji Faces Rising Suicide Rates: A Call for Change

The Ministry of Health has reported a total of 1,276 cases of suicide and attempted suicide in Fiji between 2016 and 2021, averaging about 213 incidents annually, with nearly half resulting in death. The peak occurred in 2019, with 244 cases recorded, while the Western Division consistently reported the highest number of incidents each year over the six-year period.

Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister Responsible for Health and Medical Services, emphasized the importance of changing the narrative around suicide by promoting a culture of openness, understanding, and support rather than one of silence and stigma. He urged everyone to engage in conversations regarding suicide and its prevention.

He highlighted that the World Health Organization’s Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan (2013-2030) identifies suicide as the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29 globally. Dr. Lalabalavu remarked that each individual case of suicide carries significant emotional, social, and economic repercussions, deeply impacting families and communities worldwide.

In conjunction with this initiative, the Ministry of Health will host a candlelight vigil tonight at 6 PM at Ratu Sukuna Park in observance of World Suicide Prevention Day.
