The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has delivered 3,000 emergency antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to Fiji’s Ministry of Health to assist in the country’s growing response to HIV. This initiative is critical as Fiji faces an alarming rise in new HIV cases, with an astonishing 260 percent increase reported over the last year.

Last year, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services noted 552 new HIV diagnoses from January to June, a concerning statistic that underlines the urgency of this intervention. Additionally, as of mid-December, 19 children under the age of five were diagnosed with HIV, primarily through mother-to-child transmission, highlighting the need for effective prenatal care and treatment adherence during pregnancy.

In light of these developments, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health, emphasized the importance of ongoing testing and treatment adherence to mitigate further spread of the virus. He stated that the delivery of these emergency drugs demonstrates the government’s commitment to “leaving no one behind” in the fight against HIV.

Furthermore, Munkhtuya Altangerel, the UNDP Resident Representative for the Pacific Office in Fiji, reiterated the vital role of collaboration between the UNDP and the Ministry of Health, assuring that essential HIV services will remain uninterrupted. She noted that access to life-saving treatment is key for safeguarding public health and supporting affected communities.

In July 2024, a financing agreement was signed between the Ministry of Health and UNDP, part of the Multi-country Western Pacific Programme in Fiji, aimed at ensuring the efficient procurement of necessary medications for HIV, other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and tuberculosis.
