Fiji Faces Rising Drug Crisis: What’s Behind the Surge?

Fiji has experienced significant changes in drug-related incidents over the past five years, highlighting evolving challenges in combating illicit activities, according to Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci. He shared these insights during the ODPP Annual Conference held in Sigatoka, emphasizing the serious implications these trends pose to public health, community safety, and the overall social structure of the country.

ACP Raikaci noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had a further negative impact, disrupting law enforcement efforts and creating economic conditions that intensified illicit drug activities. Despite these adversities, the last five years have provided valuable data on various aspects of drug use, including trends, geographical impacts, types of offenses, and demographics of offenders, which can be crucial in shaping future interventions.

He explained that in 2019, there were 1,275 recorded drug cases, serving as a baseline for understanding subsequent changes. The following year, 2020, saw a notable rise to 1,501 cases—an 18 percent increase attributed to intensified enforcement measures and greater drug availability. However, in 2021, the total dropped sharply to 1,032 cases, a decline of 31 percent, likely due to COVID-related restrictions that limited both criminal activities and enforcement.

The situation shifted again in 2022, with incidents increasing to 1,236 cases, a 19 percent rise signaling a rebound as restrictions were lifted. The trend continued to escalate in 2023, reaching a peak of 1,615 cases—a 31 percent increase, highlighting the mounting challenge of illicit drugs in Fiji and the complexities involved in addressing the issue effectively.
