Fiji Faces New Trend: Over 1,100 Residents Depart for Long-Term Absence

The Fiji Bureau of Statistics has reported that 1,110 Fijians left the country in July for long-term absences of one year or more. Of these, 850 individuals plan to be away for one to five years, while 260 will be absent for over five years or indefinitely.

The bureau noted that 465 of those departing cited employment as the primary reason for their long-term absence. Additionally, 243 Fijians left for overseas education or training, also for periods ranging from one to five years.

Overall, July saw a total emigration of 214 Fijians. In total, 15,223 Fijians departed the country throughout July. Among these, 13,488 (88.6 percent) were for short trips lasting less than three months, while 625 (4.1 percent) were for periods exceeding three months but less than one year.
