Fiji Faces Long-Term Emigration Surge: What’s Driving the Exodus?

In July, a total of 1,110 Fijians left the country for an extended absence of one year or more, according to the Fiji Bureau of Statistics. Among these, 850 individuals are expected to be away for periods ranging from one to five years, while 260 will be absent for more than five years or permanently.

The Bureau reports that 465 Fijians cited employment as their reason for their upcoming absence of one to five years. Additionally, 243 Fijians departed in July for purposes related to overseas education or training, also planning to stay away for one to five years. There were also 214 Fijians who emigrated from the country during the same month.

Overall, the Bureau noted that 15,223 Fijians departed Fiji in July, with 13,488 or 88.6% of these individuals leaving for short-term absences lasting under three months. Meanwhile, 625 individuals, accounting for 4.1%, were away for a period extending beyond three months but less than 12 months.
