The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has issued a warning to Fijians to limit unnecessary movements as heavy rainfall and flooding impact the country. During a press conference at the National Disaster Management Office, Mr. Ditoka advised the public to cancel gatherings and stay at home. He emphasized that the Fiji Police Force will be enforcing restrictions on movement and gatherings, urging citizens to venture out only when it is absolutely necessary for safety reasons.
The Fiji Meteorological Service has indicated that a trough of low pressure is bringing ongoing rain and clouds over Fiji, with heavy downpours expected to continue. Flood warnings are currently in place for low-lying areas.
In terms of evacuations, some homes have suffered partial damage from the flooding, specifically in Semo Village and Nalele, Nadroga. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported. Due to impassable roads, six evacuation centers in the Western Division are currently accommodating 312 evacuees.
The numbers of evacuees in these centers are as follows:
– Andrews Primary School: 183
– Saioni Church: 33
– Korovuto Secondary School: 14
– Vou Dance Group office: 7
– Nalele Community Hall: 69
– Tavua District Primary School: 9
Mr. Ditoka expressed his appreciation for the police’s efforts in ensuring the safe evacuation of affected families.
The Ministry of Health has raised alarms regarding potential health risks, particularly concerning waterborne diseases like typhoid and diarrhea. Dr. Tudravu urged residents to boil all drinking water and advised parents to keep children away from flood waters that may be contaminated. Residents are reminded to store essential items, food, medicines, and hygiene products in elevated areas to minimize health risks.
Mr. Ditoka also called upon families and community leaders to collaborate with the Government, urging heads of households to ensure they have adequate food, water, emergency supplies, and medications to last for several days.
Fijians are reminded to stay vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and prioritize health and hygiene during this challenging time.
By focusing on community responsibility and coordination with authorities, this situation demonstrates a collective resilience that can ultimately strengthen community bonds and ensure the safety and well-being of all affected citizens.
