A flash flood alert has been issued for all low-lying and flood-prone regions of Viti Levu, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service (FijiMet).

In a recent update, FijiMet indicated that a low-pressure trough is situated just south of the islands, leading to overcast conditions prevalent throughout the country. Additionally, another low-pressure trough is on its way, which is expected to bring further clouds and rain beginning today.

The weather service has cautioned about the potential for localized flooding affecting roads, crossings, and low water bridges.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has also urged villages and communities in areas including the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, as well as Viti Levu, Kadavu, and surrounding islands such as Moala and the Southern Lau Group, to remain vigilant and strictly follow the safety advisories issued by authorities.

“Due to the anticipated heavy rain, flash flooding is likely in low-lying and flood-prone areas. The public is strongly urged to avoid crossing or swimming in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and pathways where water levels exceed knee height,” stated the NDMO.

Furthermore, a strong wind warning is currently in effect for land areas of Kadavu and the nearby smaller islands, including the Yasawa and Mamanuca waters, as well as southwest Viti Levu and the Kadavu passage.
