For the past three months, the Fiji region has experienced significant seismic activity, with over 100 earthquakes recorded each month. In July alone, 170 earthquakes were documented, compared to 101 in June and 108 in May. So far, 27 earthquakes have been noted this month by Fiji Seismology. This has become the lead story in The Fiji Times for August 27.

In another update, a total of about 10,000 micro loans have been issued in Fiji, amounting to over $15 million, through a seven-year strategic collaboration between crowdfunding organization Kiva and South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) Fiji. This information was shared by Mark McDonagh, Kiva Microfunds’ Asia Pacific investment manager.

Additionally, Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou, president of the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma, has shown interest in tackling social issues facing the country, including drug abuse and HIV/AIDS. Mr. Turagavou emphasized the church’s desire to be part of substantial discussions surrounding these pressing matters.

There is a growing recognition of a serious drug problem in Fiji, highlighted by numerous arrests for methamphetamine possession and a worrying increase in cocaine use, especially in specific areas like Moala in Lau. Reports indicate that cocaine was first noted in Moala in 2018, and recent police actions underscore the severity of the situation, especially following the seizure of 4.1 tonnes of methamphetamine in Nadi earlier this year.

The alarming rise in HIV cases also serves as a significant concern, with 552 cases recorded between January and June, surpassing the total of 415 for the entire previous year.

In light of these challenges, the engagement of the church is viewed positively. The community’s issues demand collective action, and it is essential to involve everyone, including parents, responsible adults, civil society, educators, churches, and the state, to confront these crises effectively. A united approach is necessary for addressing the pressing issues at hand, and it is crucial for all sectors of society to collaborate towards creating meaningful solutions.
