Fiji Faces Dry Spell: Water Conservation Urged as Reservoirs Hit Critical Levels

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport is urging the public to conserve water as dry weather conditions are likely to impact water supply in the upcoming months. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted that Fiji experiences two distinct seasons: the Wet Season from November to April and the Dry Season from May to October.

Currently, Fiji is in its dry season, characterized by limited rainfall, as evidenced by data from various meteorological stations. Tuisawau noted that rainfall observations over the past three months confirm that Fiji is firmly in its dry season, with precipitation levels significantly below the normal monthly average.

Consequently, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has reported that several water reservoirs are reaching critical levels. With the current dry spell anticipated to last for at least the next two months, the Ministry is collaborating with relevant authorities and key sectors, including Tourism, Health, and Education, to monitor the situation and implement necessary measures to mitigate the impact while keeping the public informed.

“We encourage all residents to use water prudently during this time, ensuring that available resources can meet the essential needs of everyone across the nation,” Tuisawau stated. He emphasized that simple actions, such as reducing water consumption for non-essential activities, repairing leaks, and reusing water whenever possible, can lead to significant improvements.

WAF will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. Meanwhile, the Ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to supply water to affected areas, particularly in maritime communities.
