As floodwaters begin to recede in Fiji, the Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, especially in the Western Division, to take immediate measures to protect themselves from an increase in climate-sensitive diseases.

With the floodwaters subsiding, the immediate risks associated with flooding are diminishing. However, the potential for outbreaks of diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea remains a significant concern during this period.

Ragigia Dawai, the Director-General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized the importance of vigilance as communities transition from response to recovery. In just three days, the Red Cross has assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals affected by the floods, both in evacuation centers and within local communities.

The organization’s teams in the Western Division are actively monitoring the situation, ensuring ongoing support to those in need.

This proactive approach from the Fiji Red Cross highlights the importance of community preparedness in the face of natural disasters. By addressing potential health risks promptly, there is hope that communities can emerge from this crisis more resilient and better equipped for future challenges.

Overall, while the immediate threat of flooding may be waning, the focus on health and safety can pave the way for a healthier recovery process.
