As Fiji approaches its cyclone season, which runs from November to April, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, has highlighted the critical need for household preparedness. The Fiji Meteorological Service forecasts that one to two tropical cyclones may pass through Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone during the 2024-25 season, with the possibility of zero to one reaching severe categories (Category 3-5).
Minister Ditoka emphasized the dual focus on agency readiness and individual family preparedness. “While we focus on agency readiness, we must also prioritize preparedness in our own homes. Please ensure your families are well equipped for the cyclone season,” he stated.
Ditoka noted the increased risks posed by climate change, calling for greater integration of youth into disaster risk reduction efforts. With climate-related disasters rising in frequency, he stressed the importance of safeguarding the future of children and youth, who face disruptions in education, nutrition, and healthcare during such emergencies.
“To protect their future and the future of our Fiji, we must integrate their needs into our disaster risk reduction strategies,” he said. The Minister pointed to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, which calls for empowering children and youth in the development of disaster strategies and highlights the necessity for their meaningful engagement.
By investing in education and equipping young people, the government aims to enable them to take proactive roles in their communities during crises. This focus aligns with ongoing improvements to early warning systems under the UN Secretary-General’s Early Warnings for All initiative, which underscores the need for comprehensive disaster preparedness as Fiji braces for its cyclone season.
In summary, as Fiji prepares for the challenges of the cyclone season, proactive measures emphasizing community and youth involvement can forge a path toward resilience. Through education and preparedness, both individuals and agencies can work together to mitigate the impact of natural disasters, ensuring a safer future for all Fijians.
