Fiji Faces Critical Water Shortage: Are You Doing Your Part?

The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport in Fiji is calling on citizens to conserve water as the country faces an extended dry period that may severely affect its water supply in the upcoming months.

Currently, Fiji is in its Dry Season, which lasts from May to October, marked by low rainfall. Observations over the last three months indicate that rainfall levels are significantly below the average, in line with the characteristics of the Dry Season.

Consequently, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has reported critically low levels in several water reservoirs nationwide. In light of this alarming situation, officials have issued a public advisory, urging responsible water consumption.

With dry conditions expected to persist for at least two more months, the Ministry is actively collaborating with sectors such as Tourism, Health, and Education to monitor the situation closely and implement necessary responses.

Residents are encouraged to decrease their water usage, especially for non-essential tasks, and to take proactive measures like repairing leaks and reusing water whenever possible. Such small initiatives can collectively aid in preserving the country’s valuable water resources during this difficult time.

WAF has confirmed that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates. Furthermore, the Ministry is partnering with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development to ensure that water supplies reach affected regions, including maritime communities.

Ro Filipe Tuisawau emphasized the significance of public cooperation, stating, “We ask everyone to contribute to water conservation efforts to help manage the available resources effectively.”

The Ministry has expressed appreciation for the public’s understanding and collaboration as Fiji navigates through this critical period of water scarcity.
