Fiji will face continued disappointment in its quest for gold medals as the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature a reduced schedule with only 10 events. Several key sports, including rugby, will not be included in the lineup for the 2026 Games.
Rugby made its entrance to the Commonwealth Games in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. While initially an optional sport in 2002 and 2006, it was established as a core sport by the Commonwealth Games Federation in 2010.
According to reports from ABC, the organizers aimed to create “a financially sustainable event, developed in a short timeframe,” which contributed to the streamlined program. Commonwealth Games Scotland CEO Jon Doig emphasized that their vision was to craft a distinctive Games.
“Glasgow 2026 will possess all the drama, passion, and joy that the Commonwealth Games deliver, even if it will be lighter and leaner than prior editions,” Doig stated.
The Glasgow Games will include 10 sports, with hockey, rugby sevens, and diving among those excluded from the event.
